Luminata Daily Reflections—Equanimity
One of the great blessings of life is to be able to accept all things with an attitude of calm acceptance. This attitude of inner calm or equanimity is one of the characteristics of the enlightened mind that looks upon all events with serenity. This was the attitude so highly prized by the ancient Taoists, who realized that happiness springs from an inner state of mind—a consciousness anchored in the eternal values. Discontent was considered a curse by the ancient Taoist masters. A serene disposition that looked with equal gaze on the changes in personal fortune was a value most highly prized.
We can learn something from the ancients, for there is a deep wisdom in accepting the vicissitudes of life with serenity. An even higher attitude is to express gratitude for all life brings, even in the midst of trials and hardships. Insight into the universal laws of life enables us to turn obstacles into stepping stones and difficult experiences into the wine of wisdom. Being anchored in the deeper awareness of the eternal presence of light within us leads to happiness, even joy—the elixir of life that springs from the divine spark in the heart. —Emory Michael
